Intellicone® IPAWS – Saving resource and improving safety.

The installation of HRS’ Intellicone® Incursion Prevention and Warning System resulted in reduced resource whilst creating a safer and more manageable site.

The Challenge

The A66 Scotch Corner to Brough was planned to be closed nightly from the 13th to the 22nd of October 2025 for major tree cutting work.

Due to the length of the closure, it was planned in 2 phases and had 3-4 separate teams along the closure each night. It remained complex due to multiple side roads which would have required 90+ operatives on site to manage the closure safely.

Our Solution

The HRS team evaluated the suitability of using Intellicone® IPAWS on the A66 and it was determined that Yellow Portable Site Alarms could be used at all properties and minor side roads to warn of any vehicles entering site with the added benefit of reducing the number of operatives needed to control these locations.

This was a large closure with defined working areas for the 3-4 teams within the closure which was an optimal set up for scenario 4 (enabling Orange Portable Site Alarms to be used at either side of the works areas) in turn, this created a safe environment for the workforce and minimised the number of alarms to the workforce, optimising the working window.

Outcome

Communication between Premier TM and HRS was paramount in the successful delivery of the works, each day Premier TM would provide HRS with the works locations for the shift that evening to ensure that the equipment was positioned to create the safest possible work area for those on site.

Utilising the Intellicone® IPAWS equipment around the workforce in a ‘moving airlock’ format allowed Premier TM to get the closure installed within 30 minutes which included the HRS equipment.

Phase 1 required 53 Portable Site Alarms across the 15.4-mile closure and the client was able to start working in the closure only 45 minutes after the first
cone time.

2 major incursions occurred during the closure, but the system worked to notify those responsible and they were dealt with before reaching the workforce.

Intellicone® IPAWS helped maximise the working window each night and almost 1000 trees were cut throughout the duration of the scheme.
